Anyone familiar with Leeds will recognise this iconic piece of Typography, Whitelock's Ale House is a very old pub in the centre of town, and has it's own weath of old style ornate typography inside, but I'm just focusing on this sign right now.
As far as I'm aware it's an update of an original sign for the bar that may well be as old as the bar itself. The block-style, gothic San serif type suggests a heritage, which is exactly what you get. It's fitting for this purpose, yet it works in the current age also.
